Is there a known reason why this phone is doing this. Is it an issue with the speaker or perhaps a loose connection?

Are you referring to speakerphone calls, or calls including the handset also. If just speakerphone, most digital phones only transmit in simplex mode, meaning you can talk to the caller, listen to the caller, but you can't do both simultaneously or the calls will cut out as you say. Also, the speakerphone will pick up noise from the background if loud enough, such as a radio playing or people having a conversation close by.
