Trying to help a fellow member on Garage Journal to ID some old WE/Bell System tools and I don't know what these pliers are for. The notch confuses me...

Those are frame pliers, used to crush the insulation on the frame wire to make it easier to strip.

Klein still says them (or used to). As Bill said the notch is to strip 22/24 awg wire.

Did you Bell guys have that coated frame wire? We used it in the General System (probably from General wire, go figure) that had colored insulation and a plastic clear coat on top of that...or so it seemed. In the tribs we did our own frame work and actually, so were the installers supposed to do theirs. Me, I just uesd my measured strippers we were half soldered and half wire-wrap by the time I started.

Yes they do and actually those are the only needlenose pliers I carry in my tool pouch. No real telephone man would have regular needlenose, those were standard Bell issue to installers. I believe they also make a version with an insulating coating for going between 66 block clips and into dense terminals. And yes, that is an insulation crushing notch though I prefer to just grab it with the tips and pull it off.

The notch worked great for cloth covered wire.
Cloth wire was used for wiring LEICH PBX.40/80/100.
Leich was part of AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC at the end days. There were even central offices using a LEICH
configuration of switches. All relays with bar rods.
Anybody remember or had any experience with such?
Didn't know what i was doing but i was just a CO Installer.

I have a pair from Crescent which I think is Jonard now. They are coated like Hal says. They also have a notch for stripping wire.
