I'm thinking of purchasing an intercom card and was wondering how to hook it up. Thanks.

It depends if you want a manual intercom, a dial intercom or a "hot line".

A manual intercom is a 400 type card (401). It occupies one of the line card slots. When you go off hook the lamp lights on all sets where you've cut down the appearance. You signal the other phone by pushing a button (either a converted line key or an external button [kind of like a door bell push]). Pushing the button sends current that activates a buzzer in the other phone.

A dial intercom can take several forms, but in its most popular form, there is an external box that takes one, amphenoled 25 pair cable that gets cut down on a block and then you connect up Tip, Ring, Lamp, Lamp ground and buzzer leads to each phone that you like. Dial intercoms come in Tone, Rotary and Combination (both) models and in 10 station, 19 station and 36 station (and larger!) models. You signal other stations by picking up the line key (usually the last one on the phone) and dialing the particular code of the phone you want to signal - it's either a 1 or 2 digit code.

A Hot line is a point to point circuit that connects two phones. They come in two flavors - Automatic and manual. For automatic, you pick up the line key associated with the hot line and it automatically rings the other phone. On a manual model you have to pick up the line and then push a signal button. A hot line takes up either 1 or two 400 card positions and may require an additional external piece of equipment.

To summarize - if you want to signal one other phone, a hot line is the easiest. If you want to signal a couple of phones then a manual intercom is inexpensive. If you want to signal several sets (some of them can be single line phones too) then a dial intercom is the way to go.

Sorry if I wasn't too clear. Write back with any questions. Most of the equipment you're looking to get can probably be obtained from either ebay or from one of the members of the board.

In my case I would be looking for the automatic hotline intercom. Since I only have two Amphenol connectors at my disposal, and I still need to get another keyset (looking for a black 565) to use the other Amphenol plug, I would like to just be able to signal the other phone.

I'm imagining scenarios, which usually involve me buzzing and demanding my mom bring me something to drink.

Yes, the auto ring down would ring the other telephone...or viesa versa...and I'm imagining a scenario of you buzzing and demanding your mom bring you something to drink and your mom rearranging the location of your posterior.

You could use either 2 415 cards wired together or a 4415 card wired to two 400 cards. The 4415 is the size of a large paperback and can mount on a wall or in the KSU (if there's room). You wire it up to "A" Battery (24vdc) and 105v ring generator and then wire it to the two 400 cards.

Either scenario would work for you. You pick up phone #1 and phone #2 starts to ring. Pick it up, the ringing stops, the lamp goes steady and you have a talk path between the two sets. Or vice versa....Pick up phone #2 and Phone #1 starts ringing etc...

Well they're about that size. That is one of the dial intercoms I was mentioning. That particular model is a 19 station Combination (Rotary or Tone) version.

Just take a spare button and wire it for talk battery common to sets. The intercom card provides the light and talk bat. It's possible to do it without the intercom card and just a 400d. Big deal if you loose the hold feature on intercom. Just get talk battery to the line button.

Take a second spare button and unscrew the the lock pin and wire it to the second buzzer or ring audible in the sets and vs versa. It's now like a doorbell. Buzz or ring a group.

My 1a2 day's are dim like a bad lamp. Help me.
