and then back on again. When it's on, it shows more or less the correct screen, and when the operator extension is off-hook, identification of incoming calls, and extension status on the directory pane, but then it will just go blank and start redrawing the screen. It seems to do this randomly between 20 and 30 seconds of showing the correct display.

The console is at 9600baud connected via the RS-422 port over Cat-5 cable. It had been working well for at least 2 years, but this Saturday it started with the blanking/redrawing routine.

Our spare operator console does the same thing, and neither console will blank/redraw when within the setup menu, so it's not graphics subsystem itself.

When either of the consoles is reset to full defaults from the setup menu, it displays the correct image until the next redraw. Additionally, incoming calls or other changes in status don't seem to trigger this event, it's just more or less random.

Anyone have ideas?

What Port is it on?

Do you have anything on the Other port?
Try swapping to that port....

Is this the Terminal screen, a Wise dummy terminal?
If it is, it's probally going out, very common.

It's wired to the RS-422 (Port #3) on the MDF I/O panel. Nothing else is wired to that I/O port.

It's an official Executone operator terminal (p/n 40017.) This one and our "spare" operator terminal do the same thing (the "spare" is actually one with a bad overscan, so it's hard to read. But it also exhibits the same strange redraw condition.)

I'm beginning to wonder if it's the Cat5 from the phoneroom. I haven't yet tried it on port 4, but I'm not sure if 4 is also an RS-422 port or not.

Well if you want to rule the cabling out just take it back to the mdf panel and see what it does there. You either got a bad i/o port or a cabling problem by the sound of it.
Does it display a proper screen when the help key is pressed?

Come to think of it, port 4 may also be RS-422, as I think it also has a 5-conductor spot on the 66 panel...

Yes, the "Help" screen and the Setup screens all display properly, so it surely is a communications issue... I guess hooking it directly to the port in the morning before we open is the best troubleshooting method I have (and thought about doing that with the spare, anyway...) I just dread running another 200+ cable to the receptionist's desk, so was hoping I hadn't missed anything.

There are 2 RS422 ports as well as 2 RS232 ports. However to be an operator port requires it to be assigned as one on the B screen and the the O screen for operators. If its not assigned as an operator port then it will work as a programming port.

No luck getting the spare to work on Port 4.

Quote

 Operator B Extension **** Port * Integrated CRT Y FNCT keys=Departments N
Display Extn Names N Allow Conference N Page All Zones Y
TMC OPTION N ANI OPTION N Unscreened Transfer N
                RLS No Auto Ans N

When I went to the Port field, and entered 4, it went back to the asterisk, even after defining a valid extension as the B operator.

On the B screen, under ports, I set Port 4 to Y, 9600, but it still wouldn't allow me to choose port 4 for Operator B.

By then, it was after 8:30 so I didn't want to take the main operator terminal offline to test directly on port 3. Maybe tomorrow...

As per my previous message, yes, on the B screen under ports, I set port 4 as installed and set the baud rate at 9600.

On that screen change the port type from 070 to 000.Try that and hook up your spare screen and see if it works.

If you have a transient suppresor in-line on your service cable, then take that out. Another simple thing to chack is the service cable's connector on the backplane of the cabinet. If the screw at the top of the connector is overtight, then the bottom will kick-out and leave ports 3&4 doing funny things.

No such luck, but I did manage to disable the "real" operator terminal that way. I had to switch the terminal off and back on again for it to start working.

I was eyeing that cable with suspicion, perhaps it isn't evenly pushed in. I'll mess with that early in the morning or late this evening after the ACD stats have printed.

Even with the spare wired directly to Port 3, it blinks out and redraws sometimes up to 3 times a minute. The picture is beautiful, though-- no line noise evident as it usually is up at the front.

Up at the front, Ctrl-D won't enter the Directory-- but at the MDF, it will. When in the directory, suddenly the display blanks out and goes back to the normal operator screen. It does not automatically move away from the Help screen or the Setup screen, however.

Another question-- are the RS-422 ports designed to be active from the service port of the second cabinet? If so, would what is labeled port 3 on it actually be port 4 for the whole system? Or does it get numbered a different way? I have the six additional logical ports by virtue of having the EDCM, so I may try the method of running the Operator Terminal with the phone box (from kit 09004) and using that terminal to control the phone... I just have to wire up the connection from that box to the terminal... I do a lot of thinking aloud on this forum...

My Thoughts...to your statements..

Another question-- are the RS-422 ports designed to be active from the service port of the second cabinet

They are ' active ' BUT, You can't Use them to run the Op's Term on... They are basiclly look only.

I have the six additional logical ports by virtue of having the EDCM, so I may try the method of running the Operator Terminal with the phone box (from kit 09004) and using that terminal to control the phone,

Yes, You could try that, However when using a Phone or a DDI the interface is now rs232 not 422... so, not only do You need to wire it differently, You also need to set up the Terminal Different to match...

I would try defaulting the terminal settings

I think it's Ctrl-Icm to get into settings? then F-10 then save all and exit, reset power and give it a shot.

also, Check Your wiring again out at the jack location, I think maybe one wire is busted..

Yes, it's Ctrl-Icm. (If you'll read my prior posts, you'll see I've been in the Setup screen before.) One of the FIRST things I did when the problem started was to default the settings on the terminal.

It's not too big a deal if the Operator Terminal is in "read-only" mode on that other port-- the operator does not modify the directory, nor do any calls go through the Terminal itself. The Operator Phone is a 29K Display Phone wired to its own station port. The Terminal is just for informational purpose only.

I now have the spare hooked up to my phone line, using the "phone box" and the RS-232 cable to the terminal itself.

While I can actually access the system programming from there, I cannot set I/O port 9 as the data port for operator B (even when using a different I/O port to attempt this change):
Quote
Code
Operator Programming |
---------------------'
 Operator B Extension 3xxx Port * Integrated CRT Y FNCT keys=Departments N
Display Extn Names Y Allow Conference N Page All Zones N
TMC OPTION N ANI OPTION N Unscreened Transfer N
                RLS No Auto Ans Y
(pasted from a telnet session to the IDS)

I can even dial my extension and hear the console ringing, but RLS and ICM do nothing. (Eventually, my call goes to voicemail.)

Is there some other location to enable a second operator position?

Also, before anyone asks:

Yes, I have changed PERSONALITY to OPT'S TERM and DATA/PRINTER to AUX/MODEM and I'm plugging the RS-232 cable into the port labeled AUX.

in the Port setup:
Quote
Code
[P]ort 09 Installd Y Data prt 187
    Speed = 9600   Protocol = X_ON
Printer 0 Computer Port N Type 000
SMDR N Incom N Local N Long Dist N
ACD SMDR N Incom N Outg N Remote N
(and have tried Computer Port Y as well as modifying the Type (tried 000 and 070) in the Port setup.)

If you are not using the integrated operator base then set Integrated CRT to N.

Also per the manual ports 5-8 can support an operator terminal, not 9.

In addition,if ports 5-8 are to be used for an integrated operator then the port assignment must be programmed in the operator area before any programming in the I/O port area.

Using the complete outfit including the base unit and the terminal itself. So, I'll set Integrated CRT to Y.

D'Oh. That was it. I'm using port 9. How could I have missed that? Such a minor, little, yet important, detail... Thanks! I'll try it out tomorrow!

Well, it worked at my desk once I defined my station as being on I/O port 5. Couldn't get a handset to work with it, but that's OK-- the operator is used to a standard display phone, anyway. But, the picture is beautiful-- all the nice boxes drawn out, no line noise-- and it doesn't blink off and redraw every 20-70 seconds.

I'm tempted to steal the keyboard from that terminal-- I like having a separate console to manage the system rather than using telnet or Procomm.

Is there a pinout for that keyboard connection, or a way to modify an XT or AT keyboard to work with the Operator Terminal?

(edit: Found what may be a pinout that could work with an XT keyboard (although it's possible it requires an AT keyboard, which are more readily available):
<OL TYPE=1>
[*]Data YELLOW
[*]+5v GREEN
[*]Clock RED
[*]Ground BLACK
</OL>

Gave up on that-- just using the operator's keyboard, instead. Turns out there are much more things to consider other than just the pinouts.

Noticed, though-- if in the Port setting you put Computer Port to Y, you get that redraw thing... I could have avoided a lot of trouble, I suppose. Still, I learned quite a bit.

You hit escape to refresh screen.
The handset cord needs to be modified on one end to be RJ45. It plugs into the RJ45 plug on the operator integration box.

Post your Email or Email me and I can send you some info.

Good Luck!!

RJ11 Color RJ45
Pin 4 Yellow Pin 4
Pin 3 Red Pin 2
Pin 2 Green Pin 3
Pin 1 Black Pin 1

Good Luck!!
