Guys -

My door box at home has died. Very sad. It's been in for 30 years so I guess I can't complain, but I still need one... The system was a modified ITT 76A call announcer wired to a 401 (1A2) card. I'm no longer able to get call announcers so it's probably time for something new.

I looked at Sandman, but what I'm looking for would ideally wire to a 400 (CO) line card and ring the card and the phones when the button was pushed. HF talkback is a must.

Update - I've gotten a suggestion for a Viking W-2000. I looked at the specs and it looks like it'll do the job. Any one have an opinion or more important - one for sale?

Sam, I have an unused (but removed from the box, tested, and dusty) W-1000 you can have for 50% of retail, if you're interested.

I can also probably find a Call Announcer from one of the guys in the collectors' clubs.

Let me know what you want to do.

You know the number to call.

Thanks! I don't think the 1000 will work because of the mounting limitations (I need a surface mount and if I'm reading the spec correctly it won't mount on a standard electrical box). On the positive side I found another Call Announcer in the dreaded basement (Lord knows what else is down there!) so I can postpone the decision for a while.

I am still looking for a W2000 (or similar) - even if I'm currently back in operation. It's probably time.

Is the call announcer just an external speaker like the 4A?

Thanks, I much appreciate it. If you've got the waterproof one - even better.

Jeff -

It was an external box like a 4A speaker that was designed to work with an ITT 76A key system. The CO lines were standard 1A2 but the Intercom utilized these speaker boxes. You dialed an Intercom number (using the handset or a speakerphone) and at the called end the box beeped and then the called party could talk hands free to you.

I discovered that the box could work h/f off a 401 (manual Intercom) card. I remoted the speaker to a box by the front door and when the doorbell rings I push the line key associated with the 401 card and I can talk to the door.

Cludgey, but the price was right. (After I bought the house I was broke.)

Don,

Thanks anyway- much appreciated. I actually found a SECOND call announcer, so I'm probably good for the next 10 years or so.

I think I'd rather have the Viking unit, but maybe I'll wait till one turns up.
