Ok, so one of the sales guy's sold a polycom speakerphone

There is no analog ports on the DSU II, and there is no $$$$ on the quoted job to add any equipment

Somebody in my office said to hook it up to the Aux pairs, and it would always get line 2?

True?

I thought the aux pair acted like a Power-fail jack, that is if the system lost power, a line would then be there, Not all the time?

The other question would be, IF the aux pair would work, what happens if somebody is already on line 2, would this knock them off, or just 'join' in?

The aux pairs sense off hook condition on an analog device and light the line status light on the KSU alerting users that the line is busy.

So, will I get dialtone on the aux pair?

It would be for line 2 or line 4, depending which one you use. Not sure if the aux port would "break into" line 2 if it was already in use. I think it would. However people would see that line 2 or 4 was in use if the aux port was in use.

the AUX and power fail are 2 different connections. AUX pair would be pins 1 and 6 of the line 1&2 modular connection. giving you line 2. or pins 1 and 6 of the 3&4 modular connection giving you line 4. If it were I, try to use line 4 instead, less chance of incoming call on line 4 as there would be in line 2. If using idle line take line 4 out of line group, would help to keep line 4 open for the conf. phone.

I think they only have 2, Maybe 3 lines on the system.

I think Ohio was referring to the fact that the DSUIIs had 2 aux ports. Line 2 and Line 4. If the customer only had two lines you could wire the two CO lines to COs 2 and 4 and button map the sets to show lines 1 and 2 even though they are physically 2 and 4. Then could take advantage of both lines having the ability to support the polycom by giving busy line status.

The use of the AUX port will not "barge in" on a line in use, just like when the AUX port is in use on an ancillary device it will light the line light and a phone cannot barge in.

What Mark said. Which means you should be able to use Aux 2 (Line 2), and be okay. The downside to doing this is that it's no different than having the Polycom on it's own line, separate from the system, in the sense that you can't dial an extension to get to it, and you can't dial extensions from it to get to other phones. You also can't transfer to or from it, unless you have Centrex Transfer-type service on your C.O. lines, but then I'm not sure if the Aux port passes ringing or not.

Otherwise, the situation that you've run into is pretty much what the Aux port was there for, to my understanding. Another use would be if you wanted to add a fax for outbound. It's kind of like using a Viking Privacy Cord, but the Aux port gives you the added benefit of the busy lamp on the phones.
