I have been contracting with the same US based company for three years now and always got paid for my work in Canada. The issue is the method of payment. Often, it is by mail. I started the first week of this month and yet to get my first check on a big project. They company said they can deposit in a US bank, but the cost to do a deposit in a Canadian bank is to much. I never asked what form of transfer they company was talking about, but believe it was a wire transfer.

My Contracting agent has told me they are trying pay pal as a faster form of paying the technicians in Canada. But I have had some bad experiences with papal. One of them is the company holds onto funds for 7-10 days. I suspect it is a interest bearing account. Traditionally, this makes the seller wait to sell the item until my newly uploaded funds wait for processing.

I have tried escrow.com, another company owned by ebay once. It was simple and much faster method of sending payment for items to buy but never used it for services.

Anyone here care to make comments on pay pal if they have cleaned up there reputation and also, faster forms of payment ?

Thanks

Your banker should be able to provide you all available options. Especially if the bank has presence in both countries then your customer can direct deposit to your account.

jwooten, wish it was that easy. The only way would be to wire transfer at $30.00 between my bank in Washington to my bank in Canada. The other option is paypal but I really do not trust there method of doing business.

Sounds like you're a little impatient to me.

Like what was posted, talk to your bank if you're dealing with a Federally chartered bank. If not talk to one and see if it's worth opening up an account.

Aside from that, $30 for a big cheque is a cost of doing business.

You can always shop around for a bank that suits your needs. About 20 years ago I fired my bank and moved my funds to a bank that meets my needs.

You can also have a second bank or(S&L) just for these type of transactions.

Exactly. I deal with 3 different banks, for different features & reasons, 4 if you want to count Paypal.

i have to agree, for banking i deal with a charter bank and a credit union for different things. Shop around, some of the canadian banks now have presence on both side of the border (RBC centura and TD to name a few)

Wow, rbc and TD have a presents on both sides of the border? mmm that sounds interesting.

Now, Its not that I am impatient. Accounting at my contracting company screwed up, and approved one of three weekly closed and completed work orders.

I use paypal for billing my work all over the world and do not have any real issues with them.

As far as the cost of using Paypal, like MooreTel said, it is the cost of doing business and I factor those costs into my rates.
