I have a hotel client that recieved some 3com equipment to build an inhouse DSL system to ride on the spare pairs on the voice cable. Then they were to bring in a T1 of internet and route the IP into the DSL system. Turns out the company doing the job went bust. I can't find any information on this product but it seems like a pretty cool thing. The 3com unit was equipped with 24 Rj45 ports in a 2U rack mount chassis. I don't know the part number. I know there are other manufcaturers but I think that I'll need a pure 3com solution.

Any body had any expereinces with this system? I would like to follow up on this and see if we can implement it.

DSL normally runs on the first pair of wires and is split off and run into a DSL Modem and then into the computer or Hub/Switch. Are they adding the T1 to run VOIP phones and DSL for Data or is the T1 used for data also? Shouldn't need both for Data. You should be able to get a DSL line that runs at the same speed as a T1 (just cost a little more). If you did bring a T1 in for data it would have to connect into a CSU/DSU and then into a router. From there you could run it into a 24 port switch/hub and distribute it out to computers. The 3COM unit might just be a 24 port rack mountable switch.
To get this cleared up I would need to know what connection they have coming into the building (DSL or T1) and what are they trying to accomplish?

this technology is build a network in a building that is not wired with Cat 5 LAN cable. It will require 1 pair of any cable with DSL equipment on each end (a large rack mount unit in the equipment room and a DSL modem in the guest room) to generate a data channel. The DSL modem has a 10baseT port for computer connection.

Now the hotel has a lan without Cat 5. Bring in a high speed internet access connection, T1, Fractional T1, SDSL whatever and route onto the LAN. Add a billing package and your off.

The customer has basically some of the main units in their equipment room (24 port DSL units). We just need to supply the remaining items.

your input is highly appreciated.

OK I understand what setup they are doing. Basicly you are bringing in a High Speed connection(T1) into a DSL system (kind of like your own DSLAM) and then you send the DSL to each room and connect it with a DSL modem at the room. Thus giving a broadband connection to each room through the DSL Modem without any LAN Cat5 cable thru-out the building. Using one pair of wires that already exsist.
The equipment sounds like what a phone company would use to supply DSL to its customers. Not sure exactly what it is as I don't work on that side of the network. Hopefully someone will understand what you are looking for and know.
Good Luck

exactly! could not have said it better. there were some other companies like elastic networks and others but I doubt there is interoperability. I believe the 3com is discontinued but this is pretty cool system and is too good of an opportunity to pass up.

thanks for your attention.
