at one street address my analog laptop modem works fine. at another street address it fails to connect and talk. a milliamp test at the first location reveals 028. the same test at the second location reveals 024. i'm told that 024 is acceptable, but there may be imperceptable line noise preventing the connection. at first i considered a $100.00 line booster from sandman. a second opinion was to simply add an inline filter. does anyone have specific suggestions?

At the second address by any chance are you using a DSL carrier line?

It's your modem plain & simple. Some are overly sensitive to noise. Using dialup modems is a crap shoot, especially nowadays.

Do you know the specific name/model of the modem? You can get that info by drilling down on the item listed in the Device Manager.
Any chance that your laptop is a Toshiba?

Oh stop. We all know that a modem connection is far, FAR more efficient (in terms of throughput) than IP or anything else will ever be.
Using Z-modem--or even Kermit--will kick IP's ass in terms of throughput every day and twice on the weekend.
Me: I get an old-fashioned 56K circuit You: Get a "64K+" or 128K MPLS circuit from some busted-ass carrier, PLUS a prayer Both: Have to transmit a 6MB *.jpg file from one site to the other.
You ready to throw down?

Cmon Dag... we are talking apples to oranges here... its like saying a Honda Civic is more efficient than a Porsche... Of course it is! if your measuring only the gas milage and cost! But you still want to drive the Porsche when you need to get across town And just to be clear, I was just giving Dude a hard time for the fun of it. We don't see a lot of modem traffic anymore because broad band has gotten so cheap.
