You know, there is one other possibility. Loop current. Try reading it and see if it is out of limits (20ma +/- 5 comes to mind). High loop current will destroy trunk interfaces also.

Good point, Carl. I've had very good experience with loop current limiters from Sandman. But everything mentioned before still must be done. Loop current protection is not a replacement for good building entrance protection. (I also like the Porta 6 pair protection.)

Thanks for the advice so far. Y'all have given me the professional/commercial solution.

I guess my question now is whether a dedicated RJ45 in/out surge protectors such as this one from ELK products , or this one from APC would be decent (not the best, but adequate) protection for one device. It would sure be a lot simpler to install! If so, is one of those two better than the other?

Ditek and Sycom are also good bets. I'd suggest that you get individual suppressors for each line. That way, when they sacrifice themselves permanently saving the port, they will be cheaper to replace. AND REMEMBER, no suppressor will work without a GOOD building ground! And last but not least, AC suppression is critical, as well.
