I finally managed to get the battery door off using a couple of small precision screwdrivers, prying it off. It was not glued down, just a really, really tight fit. I guess because it is "water resistant". Battery had 1.25VDC on it, so yeah it was dead. Replaced with a new 9V battery and good to go.
