I almost put this in the Phone Booth cause it seems like some kinduv a joke...
Watched this Cisco webinar thingy yesterday about voice over the wireless LAN.
There seemed to be two arguements for it.
1. Cut down on cell phone use.
Do companies really have that much trouble buying enough minutes for their cell phone users? I don't. Get a pooled minute plan. Make the users desk phone cover to the cell phone.
2. Keeping up with appearances.
I can see this to an extent. You want your company to look modern and with it. But I also see a danger where everybody has to get the latest technology, whether there is a real business case for it or not, for fear of looking backwards.

This will be hugh once cell phone's are can do both GSM and 802.1X. Once that happens I suspect that this will really take off. The problem with your cell phone is that your limited on features. Have you ever tried to put a cell call on hold? transfer? conference? etc... But when you load something like Avaya One X mobile on your cell phone, it becomes your desk phone. Anything you can do from your desk you can do from your cell. They become one in the same.

Both of those arguments seem a little silly to me but there are a few good uses out there.

TMobile has a few phones that work both ways and a special plan using wi-fi. We helped setup a customer with such a plan. The key for them other than the fact that when on wi-fi, they were saving minutes, was when they were in their office building, they had no service. The wi-fi was a cheaper solution than in building repeaters.

You mean 802.11(something) 802.1x is an authentication protocol.

I believe most of the major cell phone carriers are now beginning to market a lan type "tower". Would be something where you would have one in an office or say you just don't have signal at home yet have high speed internet. Plug this in and your cell then goes over the internet. I have heard the reasoning for this is to lighten the congestion on the towers.
