I came across this today and felt old (again). I went to college with Julie Tandy (Tandy/Radio Shack) and although she was a "trust fund kid", she was super cool. Does anyone else remember testing tubes in the back of the store? Or getting your ARRL manuals there?

That was a primitive bag phone. Looked like a hard carrying handle, Mine at least had a nylon strap.

We tested Tubes at our local grocery chain...up until the late 70's. I still have a pair of Tandy FM Transceivers in the original box including instructions.

Tandy/Radio Shack had some cool projects. I always loved the crytal radio kits. They used to sell a low power radio transmitter good for a 100 yards maybe- that people could put in their work vans and play a recorded message broadcast about their company services. Pretty cool in traffic jams. You just tuned your car to whatever channel was listed on the van/truck. Kind of a low power pirate radio station.

I used Eckerds for testing tubes because there were everywhere in Florida.

As far as kits go I used heath kits in Tampa.Fl.
I build my first hi end stereo amp with a heath kit.
