I can't seem to get into any Sprint Protege systems anymore. I have tried 4 different laptops and every serial cable I have which is around 10. I used to be able to get into them just fine with all of these laptops so I don't understand what has changed. I am definitely using the correct versions of software for the different systems I am trying to access. Any ideas on what could have happened? Is it possible that a special serial cable is required? I already checked that the baud rate and the com port are correct.

What OS are you using?
What Communication Program are you using?
Are you using the top DB-9 port on the KSU?

Anything later than XP will not work (I have heard that XP Pro doesn't work, but I cannot verify it)

HyperTerminal does not work either.

The PC to KSU connection requires a pin-to-pin serial cable with a DB-9 Male connected to the KSU and either a DB-9 or DB-25 male connection on the PC (depending on port configuration.

I've tried Win 95, Win 98 and Win XP Home. I have now tried about 10 serial cables. I am using the Sprint software RMP for the correct version of software. I know the serial cables are correct. For example I can get into the RMP for a Tadiran Emerald ICE with no problem and it requires a serial cable as well. I am using the correct KSU port. My laptops all have the serial connections. As I said I used to be able to get into the Sprints easily but now for some reason I can't. Really strange. Any ideas?

Enter programming from the phone. Make sure the rs232 1 is still set to rmp.

I thought of that too Mr. Frodo, sir, but his original question lead me to believe it was on multiple systems.

Yes, im admin programmming the last item in NEXT (or the first item in BACK) will be "RS-232 USAGE" will toggle between RMP and ICLID.

With 4 laptops and multiple systems the rs232 usage was about the only place left to go.

Are you using multiple laptops or just changing the op system out? If you are using any type of usb to serial converter that could be the problem. I always us a pc with a real serial port for rmp because I had so many problems with windows reconfiguring the usb adapters on newer pc's and I got sick of having to reset things up every time I went to use rmp. Use win 95 or 98 or you are asking for problems. John

Remember Sprint RMP was issues back in 1995 and when then manual states: "An IBM compatible PC can be connected to an RS232C serialport in the KSU for programming and maintenance."

When was the last time you remember hearing the phrase "IBM compatible"

I'll do you one better. I have a copy of the proto type programming software for the old 616. not the newer 616 but the one that looks like the ctx. It is so buggy if I put it out in the world it would create years of unanswered tech support questions.

Yes the 824. 431484 mat code I think.Everyone thinks it was a 616 never did understand why they printed that big ol 616 on the side of those old units. It really caused a lot of confusion when they came out with the newer style 616. It was so much eaiser to just go by the mat code to avoid confusion.

I looked at the phones:

2-Digit Premier (Premier 616/824
2-Digit Ext's means Protege (Protege 32)
3-Digit Ext's means Protege (CTX, MTX, LTX)

The Protege 616 (Mat Code 699066?) felt like the end was coming... You really had to be careful in plugging in the AC power, because if you didn't do it careful enough it would default the database.

One thing I really liked about the Protege as compared to the Nortel was AA vs ATA. Two analog extensions for the price of one rather than a one for one.

They had to throw a bone when it came to single lines look what they did to us with the under powered ring circuts on the analog ext cards. I have rebuilt way to many of those to see them burn up again in 6 months. Then when they got the problem fixed with the power pack units they went eol.

I am having pretty much the same problem described, but do not have access to a laptop with a serial port anymore. Because of that I am trying to use a USB converter. Anyone have any suggestions on things to try to get that work? I have the RMP software and it seems I have the cable drivers installed right as I have been able to set its COM settings to match those in the RMP software, but I still cannot connect. I've tried switching up the Baud rate to all allowable by the RMP... 300, 600, 1200, 4800, 9600, 19200.. this is getting pretty frustrating. I've spoken to a tech at King Technologies and they basically told me that they cannot help me until I get the systems talking to each other...

-My laptop is Windows XP Home
-The system is a Sprint Protege CTX KSU

Any help would be much appreciated...

Update: I have gained access to a laptop with XP and a native serial port which I have now tried hooking up to the phone system and still am unable to get a connection. Anyone with an idea of what I might try next would be much appreciated.

What is it that you seen on the screen? Are you at the main RPM and ready to connect?

The baud rate for the CTX, I think, is 2400...but that depends on which version.

Generally speaking the three most common baud rates for the Protege are: 2400, 9600 and 19,200. If you have a CTX with voice mail, then it is definately 9600.

Also remember, it's the TOP DB-9 from programming, the bottom is for SMDR only.

The ctx default is 19200. You can change it in rmp for a allready programed system using f10 in rmp. Make sure you have the correct version of software to match your rmp.

Memory seems to recollect some versions of the CTX not at the 19200 baud rate.

I think you are correct s3t20 is the latest you could run on the 431642 1a units above 1a you can take it all the way to us5fo5.I would have to boot a t20 set of software to make sure and maybe I will if I have time. The 431642 units are still in the ctx family.

I'm having the same problem that most have mentioned in these threads. I'm trying to access the serial port on a Sprint Protege CTX KSU system. I dug out an old IBM Thinkpad with Windows 98 and connected to the KSU using a DB 9-pin (straight thru) cable. I have been trying to connect at the usual baud rates ranging from 9600, 19,200 and then went from 300 up to 9600. I am using 8 bit, 1 stop bit, no parity, no flow control in the settings. Since I don't have a copy of the RMP software I've been trying to use HyperTerm, which I see in the comments won't work. How can I get a copy of the RMP software? Or what alternatives are there for HyperTerm? Telnet? Procomm?

Oh, the problem with the system is one of the employees hit the reset switch which I believe set everything to the default settings. I have a floppy disc with the config on it, which the original support person from Telesolutions had created in 2011. I figured that if I could only get into the KSU I could upload the original config and be back in business. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hyper Terminal, Procomm and such software will not work.

When you state: "one of the employees hit the reset switch"...that is the better defined as "default system software" switch.

What happens is a customer hears: "Reset the system", which to most technicians means cycle the A/C Power...but alas the confusion happens.

Thanks so much for your quick response. I laughed at your comment on the reset switch. I'm thinking of putting tape over that switch. LOL

MAT CODE:431700 which I assume is the software version?

If you lost your programming on a power cycle you are in trouble the next time the power goes out. The battery needs to be replaced on the control board or you will keep going through this. That is also where the software is look for the labeled chips 2 of them should say something like us5f04 ofsomethin similar. RMP Software is downward compatiable only so far and if you have us5 xxx you should be good through the whole us5xxx range but if you have us4xxx you need a rmp closer to that one. The safest route is to get the exact version but you will have to check the chips to be sure what version you have.

Frodo, the problem happened when the customer RESET the system. Which of couse defaulted the database: The old RESET means DEFAULT switch.
