Sometime around the end of the month or so I'll need to move an X16 to new premises & reinstall.

How long can the system & phones be disconnected before losing memory?

Any tips or warnings?

The phones lose their extension numbers after only a few minutes of disconnection when paired on the same port, but that is easy to set up once the move is complete. The rest of the information resides in the KSU, so you will be fine.

As with any system, I'd do my best to keep the KSU powered during the transition as much as possible.

per the manual:

Set Relocation
Extension parameters such as voicemail will remain for up to 120 seconds when an extension is unplugged or being relocated. To relocate an extension simply unplug it and plug it into another extension port.

Note: A “Endpoint Device box” may be needed when relocating an extension.

Bob, I'm moving the whole system to new premises in the next city, so "seconds" isn't worth squat. laugh

What about the memory in the individual extensions, such as the "Phonebook"?

When I re-assign the lost ext number, will "Phonebook" stay intact? In other words, Ext 302 has, say, 18 numbers in the Phonebook, when I reconnect & reassign the ext number to that phone, will those numbers remain or should I tell the client to take note of any phonebook entries as well as any speed dial numbers assigned to that extension?

Its pretty simple to plug it into a battery backup unit, that should take about 5 seconds. Someone around must have one you could borrow and it uses squat for electricity.

You could even use your 12 volt car outlet to power an adapter to charge the battery backup while you are on the way and if you had to buy a battery backup which is a good idea anyway, they are less than $100 for the small ones and your car would charge that.

OK, I'll tell the users to take note of the phonebook entries so they can redo them. Thanks for the answer I needed. smile

Have battery backups in stock....kind of impossible to keep KSU & phones hooked up when moving to a new city...

I just discovered that I did not lose voice mail messages, username, extension number, or a test phone book entry after unplugging my demo system KSU overnight.

However, I did lose the test voicemail message after unplugging the extension line cord from the KSU for 1/2 hour. The other parameters are still there. I wonder why staying connected to the KSU even when it is powered down maintains the voicemail message and it is lost when disconnected from the KSU.

Dave, The 2 test phone book entries that I had in an extension remained both after I unplugged the KSU overnight and after I unplugged the line cord from the extension port after 1/2 hour. I did lose the voice mail message after I unplugged the line cord from the extension port and checked 1/2 hour later. I would still warn the users that they may lose their entries and other parameters.

Thanks Bob. I intend to warn them. In the meantime I'll set up a system here with as much mumbo-jumbo that I can think of, including VM (Which I don't think they're using), then disconnect phones for a couple of days, then KSU and take notes.

At least I'll know what to expect and warn them about.

After that, the next step is to translate the user guide to French as I have a system going in for another client in about a month and French (nor Spanish) guides are available from XBlue. There must be a demand for these and can't see why XBlue hasn't acted on it yet...

If they are living in Canada they should be bilingual. You should be able to translate the manual on a computer and send it to X-Blue

I am sure they would appreciate that and they would have it for all the other customers in Canada. They most certainly are not bilingual in Kansas and sometimes we put ourselves out to do a little extra for our customers and our neighbor dealers.

Hate to burst your bubble, but just because someone lives in Canada does not make them bilingual anymore than everyone in the States can speak & write both English and Spanish. Here in Quebec, it is much more likely, especially in my area. Outside of Quebec, "bonne chance avec ça, mon ami". (Good luck with that, my friend)

I can speak & write French enough to get by and deal with my clients, however translating English to French for official documentation is a completely different ball game.

That being said, most, if not all of my clients would appreciate any effort on my part to accommodate them.

From a manufacturer's point of view, I would think that they would want the best translation possible to promote their products, whether it be French, Spanish or whatever.

You would think that you could get a manual & user guides in all the major languages of the world---after all, everyone has been talking about this "Global Economy" for quite some time, now. At least English, French, & Spanish for North & South America. Add German for Europe---then Chinese, Japanese & Russian for Asia. It just makes sense. Each individual customer or vendor should not have to go through the time & expense of doing this---it should just be available---not in hard copy, but at least as a pdf. JMHO

I had a client that's a language school. I'm going to pay them a visit tomorrow & see if they'd be interested in doing this for me.

If they do, I'll send it to XBlue. If they won't, then I'll have to give it a shot, but will NOT be forwarding to XBlue as my French will not be perfect enough.

I would think that would be a great project for a language school, a technical manual.

And, proof the the students can put on their resume' that they can do professional work.

Once the X16 is powered down, all processing of the CPU stops, so all of the information will remain as log as you do not power the X16 up before reconnecting the phones.

UPDATE: Kill Roy was, as always, correct. Before uninstalling from the original location, just to make sure, I noted all phone serial numbers and which phone port they were on. I also made sure to unplug from the outlet (not the brick).

At new location I had all connections made prior to powering up. System & phones retained all programming. No issue at all!

Does anyone give the customer advanced warning about moving phones and losing data if unplugged too long? So far, I have not received any complaints about this. I have a x16 installation coming up and I am wondering if that is necessary.

I tell mine when I install. For this move the client was well warned beforehand. He thanked me when the job was completed and didn't lose any programming.

Standard practice for me also dictates that I only connect the jacks needed at the time. If they want to move to a non-connected jack, they have to call.

I started this practice with Nortel KSU's as I ran into too many fields that looked "Full" when in fact only a few jacks needed to be connected. In the case of XBlue, say you connected 16 jacks but only needed 10, then they call later & want a NEW jack installed somewhere. Which jumper do you pull without disconnected a station? You have no choice but go around and physically check every jack to see if it's being used. If not, pray that it's identified. See my point?

I see your point. I only connect the labeled jacks that are being used and ID them on a floorplan and on the 66 block.

If the X16 KSU is plugged in and you remove a telephone, you have 120 seconds, 2 minutes, before the information initialized. However, if you unplug the X16 KSU and then disconnect the phones nothing is erased, as long as you remember to reconnect the telephones before you power up the KSU.
