I now have the spare hooked up to my phone line, using the "phone box" and the RS-232 cable to the terminal itself. While I can actually access the system programming from there, I cannot set I/O port 9 as the data port for operator B (even when using a different I/O port to attempt this change):

Also, before anyone asks: Yes, I have changed PERSONALITY to OPT'S TERM and DATA/PRINTER to AUX/MODEM and I'm plugging the RS-232 cable into the port labeled AUX. in the Port setup:

If you are not using the integrated operator base then set Integrated CRT to N.
Also per the manual ports 5-8 can support an operator terminal,not 9.
In addition,if ports 5-8 are to be used for an integrated operator then the port assignment must be programmed in the operator area before any programming in the I/O port area.

Well, it worked at my desk once I defined my station as being on I/O port 5. Couldn't get a handset to work with it, but that's OK-- the operator is used to a standard display phone, anyway. But, the picture is beautiful-- all the nice boxes drawn out, no line noise-- and it doesn't blink off and redraw every 20-70 seconds. I'm tempted to steal the keyboard from that terminal-- I like having a separate console to manage the system rather than using telnet or Procomm. Is there a pinout for that keyboard connection, or a way to modify an XT or AT keyboard to work with the Operator Terminal? (edit: Found what may be a pinout that could work with an XT keyboard (although it's possible it requires an AT keyboard, which are more readily available): <OL TYPE=1> [*]Data YELLOW [*]+5v GREEN [*]Clock RED [*]Ground BLACK </OL> [This message has been edited by Orac (edited May 05, 2005).]

Gave up on that-- just using the operator's keyboard, instead. Turns out there are much more things to consider other than just the pinouts.
Noticed, though-- if in the Port setting you put Computer Port to Y, you get that redraw thing... I could have avoided a lot of trouble, I suppose. Still, I learned quite a bit.

You hit escape to refresh screen.
The handset cord needs to be modified on one end to be RJ45. It plugs into the RJ45 plug on the operator integration box.

I have made a cable by cutting off one end of a handset cord and crimpping on a rj45.
RJ11 Color RJ45
Pin 4 Yellow Pin 4
Pin 3 Red Pin 2
Pin 2 Green Pin 3
Pin 1 Black Pin 1
Good Luck!!
If all else fails, use a BFH.
