A few weeks ago, while installing a DSX system, I connected my USB cable, there was a loud POP from the phone system (which started smoking and had to be replaced), and my computer shut down.
Since then, I have consistently had problems with the USB ports on my computer. Some of my USB thumb drives don't work (I plug them in and nothing happens), while others work normally.
The biggest problem is that my NEC DSX administrator doesn't recognize a USB connection. I had to uninstall it then reinstall it (it will then work for awhile), then again, it stops.
I suspect that something got fried on the motherboard, but that doesn't explain the intermittent working of the ports.
Any registry edits (running Windows XP), diagnostic programs, etc. that I could try, or should I just get a PC card with USB ports on it?

Yes, it very likely would explain intermittent failure. What you will need to do is to install an internal USB card.
