OK so here is the short story...Bought a new Dell..thought I was getting XP with an upgrade to vista....well I Got Vista. i went with a Dual core AMD with 2 gigs of RAM...THIS THING CRASHES AT LEAST once a day. Blue Screen of death with a MSG "Paged MSG IN A NON PAGED AREA". The system then trys to reboot aand gets locked up in the reboot. Only wat to get it running is a power cycle the whole thing. Any sugestions on how to fix this before I wipe the drive an install XP on this machine.

Wiping it is the fix. Sorry for that help *shrug*

Anyone buying a new anything MAKE SURE you call them to order. On-line will always get you Vista with office 07. Which sux as well right now.

We are recommending that No-ONE upgrades to either for the time being.

good thing is ,as I understand it Microsoft licensees are backward compatible now so if you buy vista you can use the licensee for xp then in a few years when vista is stable you can reinstall under the same licensee.

Most of my Pc's are running 2K. I'm just getting started with XP-Pro on 1 machine. For Vista I'll wait for SP2.

I would not mind it if it worked...but I crashes daily. It is a decent machine..2 gigs of ram and a 2ghz dual core AMD processor.

SO I finally decide to wipe it and put XP back n..I go to sea gates website to download the disk wizard to perform low level format...and the utility is in a "transition: period and cannot be downloaded.

Anyone now of any other utilities I can use or have a copy of disk wizard. I did not want to just run an FDISK

We have a project for school where we need to spec out everything for small, medium, and large networks. Try finding a new computer without Vista!
Well actually Dell Optiplex still comes with XP...

I too just got a new Dell with Vista. No problems with the machine, other than half my programs aren't compatible. I can't use Clone CD, Clone DVD, or Ghost....

I had to upgrade Quickbooks too, which was my fault for not checking... but thats how software makers get their money..they only make products that last so long...Thats just the way it goes...and it will always be like that...regardless of who makes it. The days of buying a piece of software and using it forever are long gone I am afraid. And before you complain too much, think of our own business. Most of us won't touch systems with software that is out of date, or systems that are out of date.

On the flip side, the new interface is nice, although a bit to get used too. I will probably keep one machine with XP on it so I can run my clone software and such, but i will be moving my laptop over to Vista as well. One key point about Vista, check the software manufactors web site to make sure it is Vista compatable. That is where you will run into issues.

The reason I bought a Dell is because I was tired of having issues with my home built. Dell sells 40,000 machines a week, so your bound to have a few issues, but all in all, I have had tremendous luck with them. I also buy the next day on site warranty for two years on a desktop, three years on a laptop. If anything breaks, they come out the next day to fix it.

If you own a Dell, and you want to go back to XP, PM me.

ps-my Core Due runs cirlces around my old AMD. If your going to buy a new machine, get an Intel, not an AMD, and spring for the one with 4 megs Cache, the 6600 or above. Also, minimum 2 gigs of RAM....This thing runs Photoshop and some other programs really well...

so far so good...but there are a few quirks to deal with. I kind of expected that. If you do Vista, make sure you get the updates, and if you have issues, do a google search for it, and there are some fixes to them. I had to disable a feature in Roxio, and Firefox seems to give it some issues as well, but I did an update, and so far the issues have not returned.

The crashing is due to the dual core and applications that aren't written for dual core mode. The way to fix this is to utilize something called CPU affinity. You can pin applications to particular processors as needed by using Vista Taskmanager.

Vista works very very well if you know how to fix it to work with applications that weren't written for it.

Good luck to you.

Also make sure you visit update.microsoft.com after you boot up your machine and get on the net. There were tons of hot-fixes that were released that did not make it into Dell OEM Releases installed on their machines.

One last thing. Make sure ALL of the drivers you are using in Vista are Vista x86 and x86 only. Some if not all of the 64 bit drivers are very unstable.

I still have a loaner with vista. It's a huge step backwards. It looks pretty without offering anything else significant (at least nothing positive.)
Huge resource hog too.
Alienware still sells puters with XP available.

Best way to jump into vist is to run a dual boot,

you install xp first then vista on a second partition,,,, super easy to do, google search there are a few tutorials

its like having 2 computers, all your programs will run great on the xp side.... then when you want to test or play with vista reboot to that os and play around knowing you can easily just boot back to xp where everything works

I have a 300g hd split in half its awesome...

I finally put my Vista machine in the corner and swapped back to my XP machine.

1. I run on a UPS. Every morning it would tell me: Your batter is low - it's current charge is 100%. To avoid losing work, Replace your battery. Or something like that.

2. The other day it said: Your hard disk is about to crash. Backup now and put in a new hard drive. Then it tried to walk me through a backup/restore. Yeah, like that would have went well.

Meh.

Funny...I have been running Vista on both my Dell desktop and laptop with no issues at all. One thing is, they either came with Vista, or were Vista ready with a Vista drivers disk.

Most people do not understand the IMPORTANCE of having the correct drivers installed. It makes all the difference in the world when it comes to making the machine run smooth.

Guess its hard to type on your cell phone keyboard with one hand while hanging onto the Empire State Building with the other.

King Kong, we encourage proper punctuation, grammer, spelling and capitalization around here. I know you are new but just keep that in mind. Others won't be so kind. This is a professional forum and as such we expect that you will exercise some familiarity with the above.
